Bid author

A bid author is the person who writes the responses to tenders, RFPs, and questionnaires — turning a solicitation's requirements and the organization's knowledge into compliant, persuasive answer text. The role sits alongside bid managers and proposal managers, owning the words themselves.

Common in UK, EU, and Commonwealth procurement (US teams more often say proposal writer), the bid author is the hands-on-keyboard role of response work: reading each requirement, gathering evidence from subject-matter experts and past submissions, and drafting answers that satisfy the evaluator's scoring rubric in the organization's voice. Strong bid authors combine three skills — close reading (what the requirement actually asks, including the buried multi-part asks), evidence discipline (every claim backed by something real), and evaluator empathy (writing to the rubric, not to the company's ego). The role is changing shape with AI: requirement extraction, evidence retrieval, and first drafts are increasingly automated, which moves the bid author's time up the value chain — win-theme development, answer review, steering the knowledge base that grounds the drafts, and the judgment calls no rubric can automate. The title is also the origin of this platform's name: BidAuthor is built to be the AI bid author working alongside the human one.
